LION OF SCOTLAND PAGE 120

There was Colin McDonald, for example, who came down the Northern Wairoa River with a load of timber for Australia. He reached the bar at the entrance to the Kaipara - a graveyard of ships - and discovered six other vessels waiting inside. The signal showed that the bar was considered unworkable, but Colin took his ship out. When he returned to the Kaipara about a fortnight later with a load of coal, the signal was again adverse. He sailed in, and found the six ships still waiting for the bar to become more favorable.
